Swayambhu: Kathmandu’s Sacred Monkey Temple

Discover Swayambhu, the famous Monkey Temple in Kathmandu. Learn about its history, religious significance, playful monkeys, stunning views and vibrant festivals.

Swayambhu, also called the Monkey Temple, is one of the most famous and sacred places in Kathmandu. It sits on a hill and is more than 2,000 years old. People from both Buddhist and Hindu Tradition visit to pray, light butter lamps and spin prayer wheels to get blessings. The big white dome, golden spire and Buddha’s all-seeing eyes make it very special and the 13 steps on the spire show the path to enlightenment. The hill is full of playful monkeys, which is why it’s called the Monkey Temple. Around the stupa, there are many small shrines, statues and monasteries where monks meditate and study, keeping old traditions alive. During festivals like Buddha Jayanti, the temple becomes very lively with prayers, chants and colorful decorations. From the top of the hill, visitors can enjoy amazing view of Kathmandu Valley. Swayambhu is not just a religious site, it is a place where Nepal’s history, culture and traditions can be seen and felt even today.
