Essential Information

Best Time for the Ride

Choosing the right season is crucial for a safe and enjoyable Upper Mustang adventure. The most suitable periods are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the skies are clear, temperatures are moderate, and mountain and plateau views are at their best. Trails are dry, ideal for off-road riding across rocky desert paths, gravel tracks, and narrow mountain roads.
Winter riding is possible for experienced riders but requires proper gear for cold temperatures, strong winds, and occasional frost at higher elevations like Lo-Manthang and Dhakmar. Monsoon season is not recommended due to muddy tracks, landslide-prone sections, and poor visibility on cliffside roads.

Permits and Local Fees

Upper Mustang lies in a restricted area that requires special permits issued by the Nepalese government. Riders also pass through local villages and conservation zones where small community or environmental fees may apply. All permits and fee arrangements are handled by your tour guide prior to the ride.

Accommodation and Meals Provided

Accommodation during the tour is arranged in hotels, lodges, teahouses, and guesthouses in places like Jomsom, Marpha, Lo-Manthang, and Dhakmar. Rooms are simple, clean, and comfortable, providing a restful environment after long days of riding in remote high-altitude terrain.
All meals, accommodation, motorbike, fuel, and a support vehicle for luggage and emergencies are included. Meals typically include fresh Nepali dishes and common continental options, providing the energy required for demanding high-altitude riding. Hot drinks such as tea and coffee are available at most stops.

Difficulty Level

The Upper Mustang route is considered moderately to highly challenging due to its mixed terrain. Riders will navigate rocky desert trails, gravel roads, narrow cliffside paths, steep climbs, and occasional sand or loose gravel stretches, especially between Jomsom–Lo-Manthang and Lo-Manthang–Dhakmar. Strong off-road riding skills, physical stamina, and patience are required for a smooth and enjoyable experience.

High Altitude and Weather Awareness

The tour reaches elevations up to 3,800–4,000 meters in Upper Mustang plateau and Lo-Manthang. Riders may experience colder temperatures, strong winds, thinner air, and rapidly changing weather conditions. Even on sunny days, mornings and evenings can be very cold at higher stops. Layered riding gear, gloves, hats, and proper hydration are essential.

Altitude Sickness Awareness

Although the route ascends gradually, riders should be aware of possible symptoms of altitude sickness when traveling above 3,000 meters.

Common Symptoms:

  • Headache, dizziness, nausea
  • Shortness of breath, fatigue
  • Loss of appetite

Prevention Tips:

  • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol
  • Maintain a steady riding pace
  • Inform your guide immediately if you feel unwell
  • Descending to a lower altitude is the most effective remedy if symptoms appear
