Kathmandu to Upper Dolpa Motorbike Expedition via Mustang - 20 Days

Upper Dolp Off-road from Upper Mustang Motorbike Adventure

Embark on the ultimate 20-day Himalayan motorbike expedition from Kathmandu to Upper Dolpa via the legendary Mustang region and return through Nepal’s remote western mid-hills. This is not a typical touring route—it is a full-scale trans-Himalayan adventure combining high-altitude riding, extreme off-road terrain, cultural exploration, and one of the most isolated regions in the entire Himalayas.

The journey begins in Kathmandu, gradually ascending through Nepal’s diverse landscapes—from lush river valleys and terraced hills to the arid, wind-swept deserts of Mustang. Riders follow the iconic Kali Gandaki Gorge, pass through traditional Thakali villages, and enter the ancient kingdom of Lo Manthang, where centuries-old monasteries, sky caves, and Tibetan-influenced culture still thrive.

From Upper Mustang, the expedition intensifies as you leave established routes and head into the untouched wilderness of Dolpa. This region is one of Nepal’s most remote areas, accessible only by rugged trails, high mountain passes above 5,000 meters, and long days of technical riding. Here, you experience complete isolation, raw Himalayan landscapes, and authentic mountain life untouched by modern development.

A highlight of the journey is the breathtaking Shey Phoksundo Lake, famous for its deep turquoise waters surrounded by cliffs and alpine forests. The Dolpa section offers both physical challenge and spiritual silence, making it one of the most rewarding parts of the expedition.

The return journey completes a rare Himalayan loop, taking riders through Rukum, Jumla, Surkhet, Butwal, and back to Pokhara and Kathmandu. This route reveals a dramatic transformation of Nepal’s geography—from high mountains to green mid-hills and finally the subtropical lowlands—offering a completely different perspective from the outbound journey.

This expedition is designed for experienced riders seeking endurance, isolation, and true adventure. It demands physical fitness, technical riding skills, and adaptability, but rewards participants with one of the most unique motorbike journeys in the world.
