Sailung Day Ride: What Riders Should Know Before You Go

A complete guide to the Sailung day ride covering road conditions, best season, and essential tips for riders.

A day ride to Sailung is one of the most rewarding short motorbike trips you can take from Kathmandu. Located in the Dolakha region, Sailung sits at an altitude of around 3,200 meters and offers wide-open hilltop views instead of sharp mountain peaks. The ride usually starts from Kathmandu and passes through Dhulikhel, Khawa and Mude before reaching the off-road section toward Sailung. Riders should be prepared for changing road conditions throughout the journey. The first half is mostly smooth blacktop, but after Mude, the road becomes rough, dusty and uneven with loose gravel and steep climbs. A dual-purpose or off-road-capable bike is highly recommended for better control and safety.

Weather and visibility play a big role in this ride. The best time to go is during autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) when the skies are clear and the trails are dry. During winter, the upper sections can be very cold and sometimes icy, while monsoon season makes the off-road trails muddy and slippery. Riders should carry basic essentials like water, snacks, gloves and a light jacket even on a day trip, as temperatures at the top are significantly cooler than in Kathmandu. Fuel stations are limited after Dhulikhel, so it is important to fill up early. Also, mobile network coverage can be weak in certain sections, so riding in a group is safer. With the right preparation, the Sailung day ride offers a perfect mix of off-road adventure, scenic landscapes, and a peaceful escape from the city.
