Riding to Mustang Through the Kali Gandaki Valley

Ride through the Kali Gandaki Valley to Mustang with Himalayan Eco Ride. Explore winding roads, Thakali villages, monasteries and the walled city of Lo Manthang on an unforgettable motorbike adventure.

The motorbike ride to Mustang follows the Kali Gandaki Valley from Beni toward Tatopani, Ghasa, Marpha, Jomsom, and finally Lo Manthang. As you ride beside the Kali Gandaki River, you travel between the massive Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, through what is known as the world’s deepest river pass. The road keeps changing as smooth paved highway near Beni slowly turns into gravel, stones, dust, water crossings and narrow tracks after Tatopani and Ghasa. You cross suspension bridges, ride past waterfalls that spill onto the road, and feel strong valley winds as you approach Jomsom. The landscape also changes as you gain altitude, becoming dusty and more desert-like as you enter Mustang. This route lies inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, and from Kagbeni onwards you enter Upper Mustang, a restricted region that requires special permits.

Along this ride, the cultural landscape changes clearly with altitude. Tatopani is known for its natural hot springs. Marpha and Tukuche are traditional Thakali villages with stone houses, apple orchards, and local apple products. Kagbeni marks the gateway to Upper Mustang and shows strong Tibetan Buddhist influence with chortens, mani walls, and monasteries. In Upper Mustang, villages such as Ghami, Tsarang, and Lo Manthang feature mud-brick houses, ancient monasteries, and the walled city of Lo Manthang, built in the 15th century. This entire route lies inside the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP), and riders require an ACAP permit for Lower Mustang and both an ACAP permit and Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Upper Mustang. The best riding seasons are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) when the trails are dry, skies are clear, and visibility of the Himalayan peaks is at its best.

Experience the thrill of winding mountain roads and breathtaking Himalayan scenery on a motorbike ride through the Kali Gandaki Valley to Mustang. Ride narrow tracks, cross suspension bridges and pass river gorges while exploring Thakali villages, monasteries, and the historic walled city of Lo Manthang. Stop at local tea houses, try traditional snacks and enjoy the unique Tibetan-influenced culture along the way.
