Kirtipur: The Historic Town Where Tradition Lives

Discover Kirtipur, a charming town near Kathmandu known for its rich Newari culture, historic temples, colorful festivals and delicious traditional food.

Kirtipur is a small, peaceful town near Kathmandu, but it carries a huge amount of history and culture inside it. It is one of the oldest Newari settlements in Nepal, and even today people still speak Nepal Bhasa also known as Newari Bhasa, follow old traditions and live in beautiful brick houses with carved wooden windows, which makes the town feel like a living museum. What makes the town even more special is how Hindu and Buddhist cultures live together, with temples and stupas standing side by side and families respecting both traditions. Food is a huge part of Kirtipur’s culture and shows the town’s traditions and celebrations. The town is famous for Newari food, which is rich and full of flavor. For example, yomari is a sweet dumpling filled with jaggery and sesame, usually eaten during the Yomari Punhi festival. Bara, a fried lentil cake, is soft inside and crispy outside and is often served with spicy meat or curry. Kirtipur is also known for spicy meat dishes like chhoila, which is grilled buffalo or chicken mixed with spices and herbs. During festivals, colorful masked dances fill the streets and the smell of Newari food like yomari and bara comes from every home, making Kirtipur feel like a place where history is not just remembered, but still alive. These foods are more than just tasty. They are part of festivels, family gatherings and community celebrations, where neighbors and relatives cook, share and enjoy together, keeping the Newar traditions alive.
Kirtipur also has a famous temple called Bagh Bhairav, which means “Tiger Bhairav.” The statue is huge, and people believe it protects the town from evil spirits. During festivals, locals even carry the idol through the streets in a big celebration.
The town has ancient stone water spouts, called hiti, which were used for drinking and daily chores hundreds of years ago. Some are still working today!
Uma Maheshwor Temple in Kirtipur is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Sitting on a hill, it offers stunning views of the Kathmandu Valley and is a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. The temple is not only a place of worship but also a part of Kirtipur’s rich culture, especially during festivals like Shivaratri, when the town comes alive with rituals and celebrations.
