How Cold Does It Get During a Himalayan Motorbike Tour?

Temperatures during a Himalayan motorbike tour in Nepal can range from warm days in Kathmandu to freezing nights in high mountain regions like Manang and Mustang. Learn what temperatures to expect and how to prepare for the cold.

The temperature during a Himalayan motorbike tour in Nepal can change greatly depending on the season and altitude. In lower areas such as Kathmandu and Pokhara, daytime temperatures are usually comfortable. During spring and autumn, riders can expect around 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) during the day. Early mornings and evenings can be cooler, often dropping to around 8°C to 12°C (46°F to 54°F). However, as riders move higher into mountain regions like Manang, Mustang or near Thorong La Pass, temperatures can fall quickly. In these high-altitude areas, daytime temperatures may range from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F), while nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing, often reaching -5°C to -10°C (23°F to 14°F).

Winter rides can be much colder, especially from December to February. In high Himalayan regions, daytime temperatures may stay around 0°C to 8°C (32°F to 46°F), while nights can drop to -15°C (5°F) or even lower in some remote places. Wind chill also makes the cold feel stronger while riding, especially on open mountain roads and high passes. Even during warmer seasons, riders may still feel cold because of early morning starts, rain and strong winds. Wearing thermal layers, insulated jackets, gloves, neck warmers, and waterproof riding gear is very important for comfort and safety. Many riders also use heated grips or hand warmers on longer tours in colder regions. The best seasons for a Himalayan motorbike tour are spring and autumn because temperatures are more manageable and road conditions are usually better.
