Upper Mustang’s Gar Gumba: The Monastery Where Demons Became Guardians

Ghar Gumba, also known as Lo Gekar Monastery, is one of the oldest and most important Buddhist monasteries in Upper Mustang, Nepal. It was founded in the 8th century by Guru Rinpoche, who is the great master who brought Buddhism to Tibet and the surrounding Himalayan regions of Nepal.

When Guru Rinpoche started building Gar Gumba, the demon caused constant trouble. Every time the monastery was built during the day, the demon would destroy it at night. This went on for some time, until Guru Rinpoche finally managed to tame the demon. He did this through deep meditation and special rituals instead of fighting it physically. Using his spiritual powers, he calmed the demon, turning its destructive energy into a protector of the monastery.
According to the legend, he split the demon’s essence into several parts, scattered them across the area and blessed these spots with stupas, prayer stones and sacred objects. In this way, the harmful force became a guardian spirit, keeping the monastery and the surrounding lands safe.

The encounter between Guru Rinpoche and the demon is an enduring a sign of how wisdom, kindness and spiritual power can overcome fear and trouble. Today, Gar Gumba stands as a testament to this legendary event, with its ancient murals, sacred shrines and stupas preserving the memory of both the monastery’s founder and the powerful forces he overcame.
