Can you ride to Upper Mustang without a guide? Learn about the current guide and permit requirements, riding your own motorcycle, private tours and what to expect on the road to Lo Manthang.

Can You Ride to Upper Mustang Without a Guide?

If you are planning an Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour, you may wonder whether you can ride independently from Kagbeni to Lo Manthang without a guide.

For foreign travelers, you cannot enter Upper Mustang independently without the required guide and permit arrangements. Upper Mustang is a restricted area of Nepal, and the required Restricted Area Permit (RAP) must be arranged through a registered Nepali agency with a licensed guide.

You can still ride a motorcycle through Upper Mustang, including your own motorcycle where permitted, but the journey must follow the current permit and guide requirements.

Why Do You Need a Guide?

Upper Mustang is a remote restricted region with special entry regulations. A local guide can also help with:

  • Permit checkpoints and local regulations
  • Route navigation
  • Accommodation and daily logistics
  • Communication with local communities
  • Changing road and weather conditions

Can You Ride Your Own Motorcycle?

Yes, you can arrange a suitable motorcycle for the journey, subject to Nepal's applicable vehicle and permit requirements.

Your motorcycle does not remove the requirement for the necessary Upper Mustang permit and guide arrangements.

Can You Travel Privately?

Yes. You do not necessarily have to join a large group.

A private Upper Mustang motorcycle tour can be arranged for smaller groups or individual travelers, depending on the current regulations. However, private travel still requires the applicable guide and permit arrangements.

What Permits Do You Need?

Foreign travelers entering Upper Mustang need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). An Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is also required for the route through the conservation area.

The current RAP rate is US$50 per person per day for the restricted area.

The permit is arranged through a registered agency rather than independently at the checkpoint.

Where Does the Restricted Area Begin?

Kagbeni is the main gateway to Upper Mustang.

From Kagbeni, the route continues through destinations such as Chele, Ghami and Tsarang before reaching Lo Manthang.

What Is the Road Like?

The Kagbeni to Lo Manthang route includes gravel, loose rocks, dusty tracks, uneven surfaces and mountain sections.

Experienced riders may be comfortable with the terrain, but a local guide provides valuable support with navigation, road conditions and logistics.

Can Beginners Ride Upper Mustang?

Upper Mustang is best suited to riders who are comfortable with mountain roads and changing terrain.

Advanced off-road experience is not always necessary, but confidence on gravel and uneven roads is helpful. The route also reaches high altitude, with Lo Manthang at around 3,840 meters on our 12-day itinerary.

Is a Guided Tour Worth It?

For many riders, yes. A guided tour takes care of major arrangements such as permits, accommodation, route logistics and local support, allowing you to focus on the ride and experience Upper Mustang.

Can You Ride Upper Mustang Without a Guide?

No. Foreign travelers should not plan to enter the Upper Mustang restricted area independently without the required licensed guide and registered-agency arrangements.

You can still enjoy a private motorcycle journey and customize your itinerary while following the current permit and guide requirements.
